How to Play the Piano by Ear
Is it really possible to learn how to play the piano by ear? The answer is yes. Many people are under the impression that you have to be born with a natural talent to be able to play the piano by ear, but this is simply not true. You can learn how to play by ear and it is much easier than you may think.
Playing by ear is very different than playing with sheet music. You will need to understand the piano and how it works to learn how to play this way. You will need to know the names of the notes, how to make certain chords and how to play a scale. These are the basic things you will need to know, and if you already know them you can go ahead and start playing simple melodies right away.
You do not need to know how to read sheet music in order to play by ear. If you already know how to play sheet music this will not stop you or hinder you from learning how to play by ear. It will actually help you because you have become acquainted with the piano already and know the sounds of the notes and the different chords. You will have an advantage over others that are just beginning, but a beginner can catch up very quickly with a little practice.
There are courses available on the Internet that teach you sound differentiation in order to get you learning to play by ear very quickly. Learning by ear requires a much different set of skills than reading sheet music. You have to train your ear to listen very carefully to the sounds being produced on the piano.
Once you understand this training method you will find that you are able to pick out certain notes and chords from music you are listening to on the radio or a CD. You will recognize different pitches and tones and you will have a new appreciation of music in general.
Once you have learned how to play the piano by ear you will be better able to compose your own music. You will also be able to play songs that you hear simply by matching the notes and chords of the songs to the sounds produced on the piano.
It really isn’t that difficult and anyone can learn how to do it. Many people find this is the best way to learn how to play the piano because it is less limiting than reading sheet music. Don’t think that you will not be able to do it, no matter what your musical capabilities are. Try it and see for yourself. Anyone can learn to play by ear.
