How do I ease the pain of new rubber bands on my braces?

best new bands
sidekick asked:

2 hours ago I got new wires and new rubber band elastics [for the first time ever] on my braces. It hurts soo bad!!!! I can’t get the pain to go away. The orthodontist said I could take the bands off for camp (a week, and i leave tomorow) but it still hurts like crazy. How do I deal with rubber bands on braces??

I have had my braces for over 4 years now. As a matter of fact I just went this morning to the ortho and I have to wear 6 rubber bands, 5 of them are from top to bottom and one goes from one side on the top and has to stretch all the way over to the other side bottom. My mouth can only open about 1/2 an inch. Talk about sore!! anyway, what I do is hold off on the rubberbands for 2 days after I go to my appointment and they tighten everything. Usually the soreness from that is gone by then. After the 2 days I start wearing the rubberbands. The rubberband pain is not so bad if I wait those 2 days.

dont worry that happened top me a few months ago too. advil works great, but the truth is that you just have to kind of deal with it until your teeth fall into the position that you orthodontist wants it to. then the rubber bands dont hurt– it only takes like a few days. if you can, try only wearing them at night and take advil right before you go to bed

good luck!
