Breathing Exercises For Proper Singing
So you want to teach yourself to sing. You can, in fact that is really the only way to do it. What do I mean by this? Many people do not realise this but even when you have a vocal coach, you are still teaching yourself to sing.
2 factors play a role when learning to become a better singer. The first is what type of information and exercises you choose to believe, and what you ignore. The second is the application of this information. You do not need a private in house vocal coach to get the right information. If you have self discipline to practice. Practice is the most important part in becoming a better singer.
We have listed three exercises to start your training. They all focus on breathing. This is because it is the foundation for great singing. It is the most important factor. For the first exercise, lay on your back while putting a book on your lower abdomen. Relax and take a deep breath. Try to raise the book by expanding you stomach with air. Try not to expand your chest.
If you are pushing your stomach muscles out, your are doing it in correctly. The idea is to raise the book by expanding the air in your stomach. This is what proper diaphragmatic breathing should feel like. This is the way you should be breathing all the time. Not just while singing.
The next exercise trains you how to use the right amount of air. Take a 2 inch square piece of paper and put it against the wall. Blow on it from 2 inchs way and try to keep it against the wall. Your are going to do this like your are blowing out candles.
You should keep the paper on the wall as long as possible. Keep trying to improve your time. The longer the better. The air pressure you are creating to keep the paper on the wall is about what you should use while singing, regardless of how high the note is. Singing requires a lot less air than most think. The key is to remove the pressure and tension.
You should still be using the breathing style learned from the first exercise. You can always go back to that exercise if you lose the proper feeling. Spend about 10 minutes on the this exercise everyday, and you will begin to see improvements. Try to increase the amount of time that you can keep the paper against the wall.
The third exercise is call a slow leak. take a deep breath and make hissssss sound as you let air leak out from between your teeth like a snake. It should be barely audible. The idea is keep the flow of air constant. You do not want the hiss to waiver in volume or pitch. This will help you keep strong pitch when you are singing notes. This is the perfect car exercise. You should also try and do this as long as possible.
These drills will help provide you a foundation on teaching yourself to sing. Once you have strong breathing habits, the rest of you training will be much easier. The keys to success are to get take you time and get it to feel easy. If you are pushing or pulling in your neck or stomach muscles it is never good. You want to eliminate tension, and not create it.
These three drills will help you teach yourself to sing with a great foundation.
