A Wedding DJ and a Wedding Coordinator Working Together

In recent years the role of a wedding DJ has changed from someone who merely plays music, to someone who is actually a large part in the success of a Wedding reception. There are many questions that are posed when this happens. First and foremost, what is the difference between a modern-day wedding DJ and a Wedding coordinator? Or perhaps what is the responsibility level of a wedding DJ versus a wedding coordinator? There are many roles of a wedding DJ that differ from a coordinator and as they evolve more into a professional occupation rather than a hobby job, we will start to see more consistency within these guidelines.

Typically a wedding coordinator is your backbone for the day of preparation for the bride and groom. It is their job to make sure that the bridesmaids are taken care of in getting ready for the ceremony as well as running the actual logistics of walking down the aisle and leaving the ceremony site in the proper formation. This is something that typically a Wedding DJ is not responsible for.

Sometimes a DJ is hired to play music for the ceremony and the reception, in order to provide a microphone for the wedding officiant. This is usually coordinated by wedding coordinator and sometimes the wedding DJ will assist, to make sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible. Generally, this is the time in the event that a DJ would be wise to let the coordinator do most of planning and coordination.

After the ceremony has commenced, guests will continue to the cocktail hour for some drinks and food. The wedding coordinator will usually help a DJ get the wedding party lined up, but the DJ is responsible for announcing the names and making sure that the introductions are done well.

From this point on we are going to see a major transition in the responsibility levels between the coordinator and the wedding DJ. The wedding DJ from this point forward will start to work his itinerary and order of events as discussed with the bride and groom. This is due to the key point that a DJ is hired to entertain your guests. If your guests don’t stay and enjoy themselves then you are basically having and expensive dinner party and not a successful wedding reception. A good wedding DJ will have a better understanding on how to entertain guests and progress the energy to keep your guests interested in the events and having a good time.
