Educating Rita: This is an amusing adaptation of Willy Russell’s level play in reference to a youthful working class spouse who desires to better herself, and chooses boozy professor Caine as her mentor. Walters is phenomenal in her film debut performing her role and Caine has one of his best roles as her mentor. Cast includes Michael Caine, Julie Walters, Michael Williams, Maureen Lipman, Jeananne Crowley, and Malcolm Douglas. (110 minutes, 1983)

Saw: Two men are trapped in a room. Both men are chained to their half of the room. A story unfolds as these two people are given clues and information about the situation they are in and why. Can they solve the puzzle and get out alive?

Holiday: First rendition of Philip Barry’s play in reference to non-conformity is a delightful film. An untidy early talkie with projecting that in some cases Astor, Owsley even tops the more renowned 1938 rendition. Horton plays the identical role in both films. Cast includes Ann Harding, Robert Ames, Mary Astor, Edward Everett Horton, Hedda Basket, and Monroe Owsley. (96 minutes, 1930)

Bed Book and Candle: A John Van Druten play turns into so-so platform to showcase Novak as a sorceress who charms soon to be married Manhattan publisher Stewart. Kovacs and Gingold show off their comedic capabilities. Cast includes James Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon, Janice Rule, Ernie Kovacs, Hermione Gingold, and Elsa Lanchester. (103 minutes, 1958)

Marjorie Morningstar: Wood is only satisfactory as Herman Wouk’s heroine in this story of a N.Y.C. gal striving for greatness although ending up a suburban housewife, with Kelly being her summer romance. Cast includes Gene Kelly, Natalie Wood, Claire Trevor, Ed Wynn, Everett Sloane, Carolyn Jones, Martin Milner, Martin Balsam, and Ruta Lee. (123 minutes, 1958)

Hannibal Brooks: Delightful yet forgettable film of a British prisoner of war( Reed) ordered to take a priceless elephant to the Munich Zoo during WW2. Made to go on foot, he turns trip into a plan to make an escape. Cast includes Oliver Reed, Michael J. Pollard, Wolfgang Preiss, Helmut Lohner, Karin Baal, and Peter Karsten. (101 minutes, 1969)

La Separation: Knowingly detailed, beautifully performed journal of the simmering tension between a wedded couple (Huppert and Auteuil) as their relation falls apart. Cast includes Isabelle Huppert, Daniel Auteuil, Jerome Deschamps, Karin Viard, and Laurence Lerel. (85 minutes, 1994)

King David: Dense biblical tale tracks young David’s life from his boyhood battle with Goliath to his anxious reign as emperor; only goes bad in the second half, where abruptness sabotages narrative. This movie is visually striking, with Donald McAlpine’s photography. Cast includes Richard Gere, Edward Woodward, Alice Krige, Denis Quilley, Niall Buggy, Cherie Lunghi, Hurd Hatfield, and Jack Klaff. (114 minutes, 1985)
